Physiotherapy Torquay
Professional assessment and treatment
Physiotherapy Sessions
Coastal Balance Physiotherapy Torquay combines in-depth knowledge of how the body works with specialised hands-on clinical skills to assess, diagnose and treat symptoms of illness, injury or disability.
Physiotherapy is beneficial in the treatment of a variety of conditions, whether acute or chronic, which have an impact on your muscles, joints and nerves.
It can be effective in the management of:
- Neck and back pain
- Whiplash
- Headaches
- Sports injuries
- Pregnancy-related pain
- Chronic pain syndromes
- Overuse injuries
- Postural dysfunctions
Your physiotherapist will begin treatment with a comprehensive health history and physical assessment of your injury, which may involve observing your posture, active movements, range of motion, joint glides and muscle function. Based on this examination, your physiotherapist will establish a diagnosis and will work in partnership with you to develop an individualised treatment program and prognosis with respect to your specific needs and goals.
Treatment techniques may include:
- Patient education
- Joint mobilisation/manipulation
- Soft tissue work including massage or myofascial release
- Muscular retraining
- Postural re-education
- Anatomical acupuncture
- Real time ultrasound imaging
- Clinical pilates principles
By combining the principles of evidence-informed practice, evaluative skills, clinical and professional judgment, your physiotherapist will work closely with you, and often with other health care professionals, to ensure that your health goals are met.
Your progress will be monitored at follow-up sessions and your physiotherapist may adjust your treatments accordingly to make sure you return to your best as soon as possible.
What to expect?
Initial consultation: 45mins
This type of consultation is required if
- you are a new patient to the clinic.
- if you have a new or different area of injury.
- if you have a similar injury, but have not been seen by your physiotherapist for three months or more.
We ask that you arrive approximately 15-20 minutes prior to your consultation time so that you can fill out the appropriate paper work including general health information and a questionnaire related to your injury. At this time, the clinic manager will also give you a tour of the clinic and answer any questions you may have while awaiting your physiotherapist.
Once you meet your physiotherapist, you will be guided into one of our private treatment rooms. Your physiotherapist will take this opportunity to appreciate your full injury history by undertaking a detailed and comprehensive health interview and physical assessment to ensure an accurate diagnosis of the cause of your complaint.
During the physical assessment, the physiotherapist may observe your posture, range of motion, joint movements, and muscular activity. Once a working diagnosis has been made, your physiotherapist will take the time to ensure you fully understand your condition and prognosis. From here, you will collaborate on an appropriate treatment plan based on your specific goals, so that you can get back to feeling and living your best.
Your physiotherapist may have time to provide some initial treatment at the end of this session, otherwise, you will likely be given some form of therapeutic exercise, recommendation or advice regarding managing your injury until you are reviewed at your follow-up session.
You should leave this session with a full understanding of:
- your injury
- your treatment plan (type and number of sessions)
- advice on injury management at home
- your therapeutic home exercise program.
Standard consultation: 30mins
This type of consultation is required if
- you had an initial consultation for the same injury or condition within the past three months.
We ask that you arrive on time, as we value your time and ours, and only wish to provide you with the most comprehensive treatment in the allocated time frame.
During the follow-up session, your physiotherapist will once again ask you a few questions about your current injury status, and will re-assess key points as noted in your previous session.
The standard consult will primarily focus on treatment, with further re-assessment following the applied treatment technique to determine the effectiveness.
Extended consultation: 45mins
This type of consult is beneficial if
- your condition is complex.
- you require treatment on two separate injuries.
Similar in process to the standard consultation, but allows for a further 15 minutes of treatment time.
